The Collaborative Experience
The Artist And The Printer
The Collaboration Between Artist And Printer In Lithography Dates Back To The Early 19th Century In London.
This was followed by Ateliers being established in Europe with artists like Picasso testing printers outside their normal boundaries but also discovering new possibilities.
From the outset collaboration in Lithography has always been important for artists due to the complexities of the process.
This unique combination of two experts in their fields coming together at the press to create something that is greater than the two halves allowing the artist full expression in print, there is a humble respect for each other’s expertise.
Peter Lancaster has a vision of how an artist’s work could best translate into a hand printed lithograph so needs to be in tune and become the conduit for the artist and discuss then demonstrate possible drawing materials, colour layering and separations, paper options.
Each artist will bring his or her challenges to the process so every collaboration has its own approach making each experience unique.
Often artists find lithography assists in how they approach their main discipline as they have been thinking in layers, colour separations and breaking down form.
Artists will often take some convincing but once on board amazing things happen.
For the printer it’s exhilarating seeing an artist grow in confidence and respond to the new medium ending in a successful print!
